Women in Engineering: What we need to know about UX design

A UX engineer (User Experience Engineer) is a professional who creates products for human interaction. Besides the technical part, this also includes the look and feel of the product.

My Journey to becoming a UX Engineer

I never thought I would be an engineer. After high school, I didn't want to go to university. I wanted to travel the world and work odd jobs. But after a few years, I started to feel like I was stuck in a rut. I wanted to do something more with my life. So I decided to pursue my degree in Industrial Design Engineering at Chalmers University of Technology. I loved the combination of science and creativity, and I knew that it would give me the skills I needed to pursue a career within UX and develop products with human-centric design in mind.

How the UX field has evolved over years

Thankfully, the aspect of UX in product development is getting more attention as companies recognise the importance of user-centric design. But just about three years ago, I was expected to create just "pretty products" rather than products that were user-friendly and useful for human interaction. However, the tide has turned, and now UX professionals are seen as essential members of the product development team.

My role at Aurobay

Right now at Aurobay, I'm working on the Digital side. My job includes a lot of internal communications; how to create and develop platforms for human-centric interaction to reach to diverse demographic needs. The best part of working with UX is that I get to make a difference in people's lives. I get to develop and design products that make people's lives easier and more enjoyable. And I get to work with a team of talented people who are passionate about creating great products. UX creates a great challenge to combine both: the technical side and human part in the product development, how to meet both requirements. And I do look forward to excel in this field.

Advice to young girls

If you are interested in problem solving, UX is a great way to work with that. With an engineering degree, you have so many diverse possibilities that you can be anyone. This is a relief because you won't be stuck at something. You can always keep moving and constantly keep growing. The world is your oyster. You won't be stuck geographically either. It will open up so many international roads for you.
